What Is Auto-Deleveraging?
Auto-deleveraging (ADL) is a backstop used by many perpetual futures venues when a liquidated account cannot be fully absorbed by the order book and the insurance fund. Instead of socializing losses across everyone equally, the exchange may forcibly reduce opposing profitable positions — usually those with high leverage and high unrealized profit — until the bankrupt position is covered.
For the trader being ADL’d, this feels unfair: you were right on direction, yet part of your winner is closed at a system-chosen price. For the venue, ADL preserves solvency when cascading liquidations would otherwise create bad debt.
Where ADL Sits in the Risk Stack
- Mark price / oracle — determines when maintenance margin fails.
- Liquidation engine — attempts to close the underwater account via marketable orders.
- Insurance fund — pays residual losses if liquidation cannot exit cleanly.
- ADL — if insurance is insufficient or design requires it, winners on the other side are deleveraged.
Venues differ on transparency of the ranking queue, whether partial ADL is common, and how often the insurance fund is replenished from liquidation fees. Hyperliquid’s insurance mechanics are covered in Hyperliquid insurance fund explained.
Who Gets Selected for ADL?
Exact formulas vary, but ranking usually favors positions that are both highly leveraged and highly profitable on the side opposite the bankrupt account. That means a 50x moonshot long is more exposed to ADL during a short-side cascade than a lightly leveraged long with modest PnL. Some systems also weight recent profit contribution or position size relative to open interest.
Practical implication: if you run extreme leverage into a one-way move, you are not only exposed to your own liquidation — you are near the top of the ADL queue when the market violently reverses and opposite accounts blow up.
How to Lower ADL Risk Without Killing Upside
- Cap leverage — lower effective leverage reduces queue priority on most designs.
- Take partial profits — realized PnL is not sitting as an oversized unrealized winner.
- Use isolated margin for speculative legs — contain blast radius; see cross vs isolated.
- Avoid crowded extreme OI squeezes — when open interest spikes and funding is one-sided, liquidation clusters (and ADL events) become more likely.
- Prefer venues with deep books + healthy insurance — deeper secondary liquidity reduces how often ADL is needed.
ADL vs Socialized Loss vs Auto-Close Only
Some historical perp designs socialized losses pro-rata. Others rely almost entirely on insurance and backstop liquidity providers. ADL is a middle path: targeted deleveraging of the most leveraged winners. When you compare Hyperliquid, Lighter, and Aster, read docs for whether ADL exists, how rankings work, and whether you receive a clear fill notification. Product pages rarely emphasize ADL — treat it as homework before sizing a narrative trade.
Trader Playbook During Volatile Cascades
If liquidations are printing and mark price is gapping, assume queue risk is elevated. Consider: reduce leverage on runners, convert some unrealized gains to realized via reduce-only takes, and avoid adding size into already extreme funding. Our guides on liquidation cascades and liquidation prevention pair well with this topic.
