Smart Money Concepts (SMC) popularized ideas like market structure, order blocks, fair value gaps, and liquidity pools. Crypto perpetual books on Hyperliquid, Lighter, and Aster are 24/7, heavily automated, and funding-sensitive. That means SMC can help frame where trapped traders sit — but it is not magic. Combine structure with volume, liquidation maps, and risk rules from our risk framework.

Key Building Blocks

Market structure

Track swing highs and lows. A break of structure (BOS) in the trend direction suggests continuation; a change of character (CHOCH) against the prior trend warns of a deeper pullback or reversal. On DEXs, validate breaks with range expansion and follow-through — one wick beyond a level is not automatically institutional intent.

Liquidity pools

Equal highs/lows, session highs, and obvious stop shelves attract sweeps. Crypto loves stop hunts before the real move. Pair this idea with liquidation heatmaps when available so you are not guessing blind.

Order blocks

An order block is often defined as the last opposing candle before a strong impulsive move that breaks structure. Traders look for price to return to that zone for entry with defined risk below/above the block. Prefer blocks that align with higher-timeframe bias and sit near meaningful liquidity.

Imbalances / gaps

Fast moves leave inefficiencies. Some fill later; some never do in strong trends. Do not force every gap fill as a trade thesis on a trending perp.

A Simple Order-Block Workflow for Perps

• 1. Bias: Daily/4H structure bullish or bearish?
• 2. Wait for liquidity event: Sweep of obvious highs/lows or liquidation cascade.
• 3. Mark the impulse origin: Last down-close before bullish impulse (bullish OB) or last up-close before bearish impulse (bearish OB).
• 4. Enter on reclaim or limit in zone: Invalidation beyond the block with buffer for wicks.

Crypto-Specific Filters

Funding: Do not long into extreme positive funding solely because an order block “looks perfect.” Funding can bleed a slow SMC hold. Read Lighter funding and Hyperliquid funding explainers before multi-day holds.

Risk Rules That Keep SMC Alive

• Risk a fixed fraction of equity per idea (for example 0.25–1%).
• Skip blocks that require stops wider than your R budget allows at planned size.
• One trade thesis per structure event — no averaging into broken blocks.
• Journal screenshot of structure before entry; review weekly win rate by setup type.

Common SMC Mistakes on DEXs

• Labeling every candle an order block until the chart is unreadable.
• Ignoring higher-timeframe trend and counter-trend sniping every OB.
• Entering before the sweep completes (“anticipating smart money”).
• Moving invalidation because “institutions need more room.”
