Understanding Leverage on DEX Perpetuals

Leverage allows you to control a larger position than your deposited capital would normally permit. On Hyperliquid, you can trade with up to 50x leverage on major pairs like BTC and ETH. On Lighter, leverage goes up to 100x. On Aster, similar high-leverage options exist. But just because you can use 100x leverage does not mean you should.

Leverage is a double-edged sword. At 10x leverage, a 1% price move in your favor yields a 10% gain on your capital. The same move against you results in a 10% loss. At 50x, that 1% move becomes a 50% gain or loss — and a 2% adverse move liquidates your entire position.

The Mathematics of Liquidation

Your liquidation price is determined by your leverage, position size, and the margin you have posted. The formula is straightforward: at 10x leverage with isolated margin, your position is liquidated when the price moves approximately 8-9% against you (accounting for maintenance margin). At 50x, that liquidation threshold shrinks to roughly 1.6-1.8%.

This is why high leverage is so dangerous in volatile markets. Bitcoin regularly moves 2-3% in a single hour during volatile periods. A 50x leveraged BTC long position opened during a volatile session can be liquidated by a move that is entirely normal for the asset. You do not need a black swan event to get wiped out — just an average Tuesday.

Recommended Leverage by Trading Style

Scalping: 3x – 10x

Scalpers target very small price moves, often holding positions for seconds or minutes. Because the profit target per trade is small (0.1-0.5%), higher leverage (5-10x) can make these tiny moves meaningful in dollar terms. However, scalpers must be disciplined with stop losses — a sudden spike at 10x leverage without a stop can be catastrophic. Most experienced scalpers use 3-5x and compound their edge through volume.

Swing Trading: 2x – 5x

Swing traders hold positions for hours to days, targeting 3-10% price moves. At 3x leverage, a 5% move yields a 15% return — solid for a multi-day hold. Going above 5x for swing trading exposes you to overnight gaps and weekend volatility that can trigger liquidation while you sleep. Conservative swing traders often stick to 2x to ensure their liquidation price is far enough away that only a major market event would hit it.

Position Trading: 1x – 2x

Position traders hold for weeks or months. At these timeframes, the funding rate becomes a significant factor. Using low leverage (1-2x) minimizes funding costs and provides a wide safety margin against drawdowns. A 30% correction does not liquidate a 2x long, while it wipes out anything above 3x.

The Kelly Criterion for Leverage Sizing

A more mathematical approach to leverage selection comes from the Kelly Criterion, adapted for trading:

Optimal leverage = (Win rate × Average win ratio) − (Loss rate × Average loss ratio) / (Average loss ratio)

For example, if your strategy has a 55% win rate, average winner is 2x your risk, and average loser is 1x your risk: Optimal leverage = (0.55 × 2 − 0.45 × 1) / 1 = 0.65. This suggests 0.65x leverage — essentially, do not use leverage at all for this strategy unless you are highly confident in your edge.

Most traders should use fractional Kelly — 25-50% of the Kelly recommendation — to account for estimation errors and emotional factors. A strategy that the Kelly formula says should use 5x leverage should be traded at 1.25x-2.5x in practice.

Position Sizing and Leverage Are Connected

Many traders confuse leverage with position sizing. These are separate but related concepts:

  • Leverage determines your liquidation price and margin requirement
  • Position size determines how much dollar exposure you have relative to your account

You can achieve the same dollar exposure with 2x leverage and a large margin deposit as you can with 20x leverage and a small margin deposit. The difference is your liquidation price. The 2x position can withstand a 45% drawdown; the 20x position liquidates at roughly 4.5%. For equivalent position sizes, lower leverage is always safer.

Exchange-Specific Leverage Considerations

Hyperliquid — 50x Max

Hyperliquid offers up to 50x leverage on major pairs. The platform uses isolated margin by default with cross-margin available. When using cross margin, your entire account balance backs the position, which can delay liquidation but also means a single bad trade can wipe out everything. Always use isolated margin when trading with leverage above 5x.

Lighter — 100x Max

Lighter's 100x leverage is among the highest in DeFi. The zero-fee model is appealing for high-frequency scalpers using moderate leverage (5-10x), but 100x is a marketing number — no responsible trader uses it for more than a few seconds. Use referral code 718610TD for benefits when trading on Lighter.

Aster — High Leverage Available

Aster also supports high leverage with a clean trading interface. The key is the same regardless of exchange: pick leverage based on your strategy and risk tolerance, not the maximum the platform offers. Use code 4474ca on Aster.

Practical Leverage Rules

  • Beginners: 1-2x maximum. Learn to be consistently profitable without leverage before adding it.
  • Never exceed 5x for positions held overnight. Crypto moves while you sleep.
  • Size your position, then choose leverage. Decide your dollar exposure first, then use the minimum leverage needed to achieve it.
  • The 1% rule: Never risk more than 1% of your account on a single trade. If you are using 10x leverage, your stop loss should be at 0.1% from entry to stay within this rule.
  • Track your leverage-adjusted returns. A 50% gain on 2x leverage is more impressive than a 50% gain on 20x leverage because it involved far less risk.
